Sex Workers Need HUMAN RIGHTS, Not Legal Wrongs
*TURN OFF THE BLUE LIGHT, IRELAND POSTER CAMPAIGN*
As much as I want to do something along the lines of a promotional/ad campaign involving sex worker rights in the Philippines for my thesis, I’m afraid it would be too optimistic. We’re so far from even grasping this concept, possibly because our sex workers are in a very different situation from those in other countries. Many really are forced into that position and it will be difficult to give them a sense of empowerment when so many forces (religion, societal norms, and close family ties which perpetuate these pressures) are going against them.
However, I really have a lot more to learn about these issues and I would love to be able to study it for my thesis. It’s just so scary to carry the mantle of feminism and sex positivity when I myself admit my knowledge is limited. I don’t want to fall flat on my face and be used as an example for those going against my cause. Controversy just isn’t my thing.
Plus it would be difficult answering people who ask me what my thesis is.
“Ay tita, kasi… ano… uh…”
